Standard 3: Diverse Learners
"A teacher must understand how students differ in their approaches to learning and create instructional opportunities that are adapted to students with diverse backgrounds and exceptionalities."
Just as everyone has different life experiences, the experiences had in an elementary classroom are no different. In order for students to learn to the best of their abilities, their teacher must provide them with instruction that meets each of their individual needs. Modification and flexibility are key components in teaching to a class of students with diverse backgrounds and exceptionalities.

Artifact Descriptions
One artifact I have included to represent Standard 3 is a copy of a classroom demographic survey I completed. The survey I have included is from a classroom I completed 30 clinical hours in at Gage Elementary. The survey includes class information on race, IEPs, the gifted and talented program, title 1 programs, and english language learners. Another artifact I have included to represent this standard is an outline of a descriptive review I wrote on a kindergarten student. The outline shows the key ideas and details that I included when writing my descriptive review paper on this student.

The classroom demographic survey shows that I am knowledgeable in understanding how the students in a classroom differ from one another and how it is my responsibility to ensure that they receive instructional opportunities that will promote their independence and success.
The kindergarten student I wrote my descriptive review on was in fact on an IEP. The significance of doing the descriptive review on this child was that I was able to get a better understanding of how this student differed in his learning and how I as a teacher could better his learning and boost his self-esteem. This artifact shows my ability to identify when and why there is a need to modify lesson plans for specific students. |
I believe that in my future classroom, I will have a variety of students that come from different life experiences, and will have diverse instructional needs. A tool such as this demographic survey may be used. This survey helped me better understand how to differentiate my instruction to meet all of my students needs.
After reviewing what I learned about this energetic, bubbly, full of life kindergartener, I became more aware of how important it is to get to know each student in a classroom. In my future classroom, I will make it my priority to get to know each and every one of my students on a personal level. I believe the better you know the students, the better you can teach them. |
