Standard 8: Assessment
"A teacher must understand and be able to use formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development of the student."
The teacher uses assessment daily to better understand what students are understanding and what they may not be. I believe an effective teacher will use formal and informal assessments in the classroom regularly. Assessment is a valuable tool that should be looked at as a positive way to help students in becoming more knowledgeable on the content they are learning.

Artifact Descriptions
One artifact I have chosen to represent Standard 8 is a copy of a student data tracker I utilized in a fourth grade classroom. This student data tracker is designed for students to track their scores on unit math assessments. The students are expected to fill in the bar graph according to the percentage score they received on the test. The students were also expected to take the tracker home and have their parent or guardian sign the tracker after each test. Another artifact I have included to represent this standard is a copy of a corrected homelink from a third grade classroom. The front page of this artifact shows what score the student received and which problems were marked incorrect. The back page of this artifact shows the specific feedback I provided this student with regarding the homelink.

The student data tracker gives students an opportunity to see how they are doing in a particular subject area. The artifact I have provided is specifically for math. While the test itself is a formal type of assessment, a student data tracker is a great informal way to promote independence in assessment. The data tracker creates opportunity for students to be responsible for their own learning, they are filling in what they achieved. This artifact addresses Standard 8 well by promoting continuous intellectual development of the student.
The student work sample provides evidence of my ability to provide constructive feedback to a student on a homework assignment. The feedback I have provided this student with is more beneficial to them than simply receiving a numerical score. My feedback provides the student with what they need improvement on, and how they can achieve improvement in that area. |
As a future educator, I would love to use a student data tracker such as the one I used in this clinical. It not only was beneficial for the students to track where they were at, but it also did not take up much class time. Watching the students fill out these data trackers did change my opinion on student data folders. I can see myself implementing student data folders in my future classroom and requiring parent signatures on completed trackers as well.
Since I created this artifact, I have grown in my ability to give feedback. Giving feedback is so much more than simply saying "good job". The students deserve more than that, and they need more than that. Students need to be told how they can improve on the areas they are struggling with. As a teacher, I will make it my job to ensure that my students know how they can improve on skills they struggle with by providing them with appropriate feedback. |
