Standard 7: Planning Instruction
"A teacher must be able to plan and manage instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, and the community, and curriculum goals."
The teacher understands the significance of helping students meet their learning goals through strategic planning and instruction. The teacher must consider how students learn differently as well as the different background each student comes from when creating the instructional plan. The teacher must be organized in using content knowledge, curriculum, integrative strategies, and pedagogy to develop each lesson.

Artifact Descriptions
One artifact I have chosen to represent Standard 7 is a copy of my math mini unit lesson plan. This math mini unit consists of three connected math lessons that I taught in a first grade classroom. The lessons are written in the edTPA lesson plan format, as they were apart of the tuning protocol assignment which was in preparation for the edTPA. The lessons focus on students applying counting and ordering skills for whole numbers up to 120. Another artifact I have included to represent this standard is a copy of a small group reading lesson plan I created for a group of five students in a third grade classroom. The plan is designed around a book that I chose for the group that was at those specific students reading level. The reading group met for fifteen minutes, a total of five times.

Synthesis |
After analyzing my math mini unit, I felt it provided a strong example of my ability to plan instruction with clear content objectives and appropriate modifications to support the students I was teaching. The math mini unit was carefully planned with a central focus and learning objectives that were in sync with the state standards and school curriculum. I also planned this unit with the students of this particular first grade class in mind. As a result, the students were actively engaged in their learning during the mini unit.
The small group reading segment was carefully planned with five specific students in mind. The text I chose for this group was based upon what reading level this group of students was at. Higher-level critical thinking questions were planned in advance for this learning segment with the knowledge of these students and their prior experience in mind. |
The math mini unit provided me with a good experience to learn from as an educator. I will as a teacher plan and teach several connected math lessons, and the knowledge gained from this project will help me be successful. It is important that I remember to encourage students to tap into their previous knowledge when introducing a new topic. My instructor gave me good feedback on walking around the room more often when I taught this learning segment.
Over the years ahead, I hope to make small group reading instruction a daily occurrence in my classroom. I believe the students learn much more when they are in a smaller group, focusing on text that is at their reading level, versus learning in a whole group setting. I would like to improve my ability to write critical-thinking questions that relate to what we are reading in small group. |
