Standard 9: Reflection and Professional Development
"A teacher must be a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of choices and actions on others, including students, parents, and other professionals in the learning community, and who seeks out opportunities for professional growth."
A teacher should continually be seeking ways to better oneself personally and inside the classroom. I believe reflection on each day in the classroom is key to professionally improving oneself. As a result of reflecting, an excellent teacher will then seek out new methods to use in the classroom to improve student learning.

Artifact Descriptions
One artifact I have included to represent Standard 9 is a copy of a letter of recommendation that was written for me. The letter is written by the cooperating teacher I had the pleasure of working with during my six-week student teaching experience. Another artifact I have included to represent this standard is the powerpoint I created to present my tuning protocol assignment. The tuning protocol consisted of teaching a math mini unit, identifying a central focus, providing a context of learning, and a videotaped lesson. This powerpoint gives a brief outline of what my project entailed.

I provided a copy of one of my letters of recommendation because it clearly states my ambition to seek professional growth in the professional teaching community. The letter states how I seek to better myself and my students while in the classroom.
The tuning protocol shows my ability to reflect upon a learning segment that I planned and taught, and seek feedback on how I can better my future instruction. This tuning protocol presentation was given in front of six peers and an instructor. All seven people present gave positive and negative feedback on my presentation and teaching abilities shown in the video clip. |
The letter of recommendation helps me recognize my strengths as an educator and motivates me to continually better myself inside the classroom and beyond. The strengths mentioned in the letter are areas I will continually strive to excel in, and areas not mentioned I will work harder in.
I have grown immensely since completing the tuning protocol. It was a learning experience that better prepared me to complete the edTPA and I am thankful for that. I will hold the constructive critiques I acquired during the tuning protocol close to me and use them to continue to better my teaching skills in my future classroom. |
